Introducing New Dengue Fever Rapid Tests

The Dengue virus belongs to the Flavavirus group of viruses. They have four virus stereotypes; DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. This virus is found commonly throughout the tropics. An acute, infectious, endemic, and epidemic disease; caused by a filtrable virus transmitted by mosquitoes, especially by the Aedes aegypti. Dengue is characterized by a febrile paroxysm, severe pains in the bones and muscles, headache, lymphaderophathy, maculopapular rash, retrobulbar pain, swelling, reddening, and pain of the joints. At times there is a coetaneous eruption. The period of incubation is from three to five days and the invasion is sudden. The high fever (106 F.) lasts for three or four days and subsides for an interval, then is followed by a second paroxysm. Convalescence is slow and complications are rare. The disease is widespread throughout the tropics and the subtropics. Also called breakbone fever, dandy fever.

From July 1993 through 1994, Dengue fever in Jeddah of Saudi Arabian revealed a steady increase in cases reported. All hospitals and clinics were alerted and asked to report suspect cases of Dengue fever. World Health Organization carried out a survey for Dengue fever.
